Suggestions and supplements:

The lesson plans have been tested in 45-minute lesson units, but can also offer a basis for a 60-minute lesson. In this case, certain points can be looked at more intensively, depending on the interests of the group in question.

This programme does not contain any Christmas/Easter songs or similar, meaning that it is not tied to any particular holiday or time of year.

All of the instrumental accompaniments to the songs, poems and finger games, as well as the orchestrations, can of course be modified at will and a customized to suit the particularities of the groups. Because all of the lessons were tested various times with different groups of children and by different teachers, the lesson plans include a multitude of tips and tricks from real lessons.

Keep Growing Musically (Student’s Book)

The teaching book “Musikalisch Größer Werden” by Afra Schranner allows children, who are visiting the preschool, to discover the joy of music through early musical education lessons in 38 weekly hour lessons. It gives them the opportunity to explore music with all of their senses and to grasp it in the truest sense of the word.

The material consists of two parts: the teacher’s file and the children’s folder. The teacher’s file includes a detailed introduction, exact lesson plans, practical tips, explanatory illustrations and an overview of the material, so that music teachers, teachers from other areas, preschool teachers and also anyone else who is interested can pass on the knowledge to the children in a lively way.

What children find particularly exciting about this type of teaching is that they get an empty folder at the start of the year which they then fill with song and work sheets from their music lessons. This means that they won’t already have seen the songs, pictures and worksheets at home and these are really new for the whole group each lesson.

With her teaching material TAP 1 and TAP 2, the author wants to introduce children from 4 years of age to music and encourage them in their musical development, in which all their senses and motor skills are addressed. Children will learn their first rhythms through movement games and the conscious perception of different pitches through relative solmization. This is extended in the second year by the notes of the C major scale. Introducing instruments, which is another aim of this early education, should present children a wide bandwidth of different instruments to stimulate their interest and their joy in playing. In doing so, it is advantageous, but not a must, to have the instruments (be it recorder, piano, drums or stringed instruments) available in the lessons so that the children can directly try out the sound and can grasp how to handle the instrument properly.

The CD, which is in both the teacher’s and the pupil’s file, includes all of the songs as a full version and also as a playback. The teacher also has a second CD with additional material where they will find audio examples, audio puzzles and sound and language examples.

Because the teacher’s file includes detailed descriptions by the author, even teachers and preschool teachers who don’t have any specific musical training can teach from this programme. The lessons do not have to be implemented word-for-word - rather, teachers can shorten or lengthen lessons according to how much time is planned. They can also replace certain songs with their own ideas. In this way, this early musical education is not only for music schools, but can also be used in nurseries, primary schools, day-care and toddler’s groups.

The author Afra Schranner, born in 1970 in Steinhöring, visited the vocational college for music in Plattling, where she majored in flute, after completing her school leaving certificate. After completing her training there with honours, she studied Early Musical Education and Basic Training from 1990 until 1994 at the Richard-Strauss Conservatory in Munich under Eva-Ruth Kahmann, as well as flute under Elisabeth Weinzierl-Wächter. She lived in Fraistenberg in Bayern and led the music establishment “Papageno Musik Lernen” there from 1990. Ideas and experiences from the author’s 20 years of teaching flowed into the teaching programme. She carried out, tested and optimized all of the lesson plans together with colleagues in numerous children’s groups.
